Ben Miles

Star of stage, screen, and TV; Ben played Thomas Cromwell in the RSC stage production of Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies, and later reprised that role in the staging of The Mirror And The Light in 2021.

In an article Ben wrote for The Guardian soon after Hilary’s death in November 2022, he recalls how ‘Hilary and her husband, Gerald, came into my life nine years ago, yet it feels as though I’ve always known them. It was the autumn of 2013 at the Royal Shakespeare Company rehearsal rooms on Clapham High Street in south-west London. I had been cast to play Thomas Cromwell in the stage adaptations of Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies, and the company had met for a read-through.’

Ben goes on to relate how ‘Hilary could place a unique kind of bespoke benevolence in the hearts of anyone she came across. ..I saw a much-lauded, well seasoned actor reduced to tears as a consequence of Hilary’s discreet, perfectly timed and exquisitely phrased offer of praise. She knew what made people tick, and she knew the power of words.’

At the Wolf Hall Weekend, Ben, and other actors, will be reading some of his favourite passages from the trilogy and he will be speaking about Hilary’s direct involvement in the  the stage and TV adaptations of her work, and what it meant for him to get inside the skin of his famous character; Thomas Cromwell.
