Historian, author and podcaster, Miranda is the author of The House of Cromwell (to be published by William Collins in 2026), a history of the Cromwell family that brings together Thomas and his great-great-great nephew Oliver Cromwell for the first time.
Since completing her PhD on Oliver Cromwell’s Protectorate, Miranda has published two historical novels about his daughters, The Puritan Princess and The Rebel Daughter, and written chapters on Oliver Cromwell and John Pym for the anthologies Kings & Queens and Powerbrokers & Political Fixers edited by Iain Dale. She has been a Trustee of the Cromwell Association for over a decade, contributes academic articles, features and book reviews to publications including History Today, the Critic, BBC History, Aspects of History, Historia and the journal Cromwelliana, and presents widely at conferences and literary festivals. Together with the historian Paul Lay, Miranda hosts the history podcast ‘1666 And All That’ and she has appeared as a guest on many radio shows and podcasts including Talk Radio Europe, BBC History Magazine, ‘The History of England’, ‘History Hack’ and ‘Not Just the Tudors’. In 2023 she was a judge for the Historical Writers Association’s crown awards.
Inspired by Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall trilogy, Miranda has spent the last few years researching Thomas Cromwell and the wider family to explore the astonishing fact that he and Oliver Cromwell – two of the most powerful, impactful and controversial commoners in British history – came from the same family. The House of Cromwell takes readers on a journey through more than two centuries of history, from the Wars of the Roses to the accession of the Hanoverians, to tell the story of the most unique, disruptive, creative and controversial family to rule Britain. Examining Thomas and Oliver Cromwell within the context of the family that meant so much to them both, the book challenges ingrained assumptions and popular myths to humanise the Cromwells and return them to their starring roles in Britain’s national story.
